Publications

Beginning with volume 11 Smithsonian Intitution Scholarly Press distributes hard copies free to several hundred libraries world-wide. In addition, PDF versions of the complete contents are posted on the "Open SI" website (generally in advance of the print editon): http://opensi.si.edu/index.php/smithsonian/catalog/book/168

After each meeting there is a discussion about whether the topic deserves treatment in a book. If the answer is yes, editors (usually two) are chosen, and they assume the task of signing up those whose presentations were especially effective in using objects to provide fresh historical insights. The editors solicit additional contributions from other scholars as needed so that the final publication has a variety of approaches to a common subject.

Over half our meetings have stimulated this kind of treatment and we are very pleased with the results. Thanks are due to the authors and editors, and also to our publishers: Harwood Academic Publications that set the tone with the first two volumes, the Science Museum Press that took us through our formative years (volumes 4-6, reprinting 1 and 2), and the Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press that beginning with volume 7 is conducting us through what might be comsidered our more mature phase.

We are taking advantage of the fact that volumes 1-6 are out of print to reproduce them on this website (in pdf). In each case all of the text is here, including front matter and index. For some illustrations we were unable to obtain copyright permission and the spaces have been left blank, to be filled with images when proper information is received.
